In this week’s presentation, Dr. Jud Lake takes on the critics of Ellen White in his presentation from the E.G. White Summit in Gladstone, Oregon, November 2005. Dr. Lake is a professor of Preaching and Adventist studies at the School of Religion, Southern Adventist University. You can see my prior comments on this presentation here on the blog. Be sure and post your thoughts after you see the video!

What a great video! I laughed until I cried. Dr. Lake has more expression on his face than any mime I’ve ever been bothered by on the streets of New York City. Dr. Lake criticizes EGW’s challengers, using the same tactics he accuses them of employing. For a scholar, he gives the most milk toast, superficial, lop-sided defense of EGW I’ve ever come across. Is this the best the SDA church can do? Being an outsider and watching this drama, I can sure see why the SDA church is hemorrhaging members. I’ve watched and read much of the material that the “Former” SDAs have, and Dr. Lake aggregates or misrepresents the other side to an alarming degree. It rings of desperation.

(This is a comment prompted by the above comment by Jen)
I have been a searcher for truth for many years and I have found the truth in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I am so glad to be a Seventh-day Adventist! I know God has given this church special truth that He has not given to any other church. I am so thankful to be a part of God’s Remnant Church! And since the current topic of discussion is Ellen White’s writings, I want to testify that I have been helped tremendously in my walk with Christ by her writings. There have been so many times that I have been pleading with God to show me the answer to some question I had and He would use one of the books written by Ellen White to answer me. And they have been such an encouragement to me. I believe they are the best books that have ever come before the world, besides God’s Holy Word, the Bible. After thoroughly studying her life and writings I definitely believe Ellen White was inspired by God Himself to write the books she wrote.
And just as a warning for those that criticize her - beware, lest in the end you be found “to be fighting against God” Acts 5:39 Was there ever a true prophet in the Bible that was not accused and condemned? False prophets were accepted as true because they preached smooth messages, but true prophets were condemned as false because they spoke the plain, pointed, truth that God told them to speak. So it is no wonder that so many people accuse Ellen White as being a false prophet.
“Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.”

Well, I’ve been praying about a response here, and meanwhile someone has come and shared a testimony. How wonderful that is.
The only point I wanted to say is this … Jen says that the SDA church is hemorrhaging members. I’m not sure that the popularity of any given message is a good yardstick to measure the veracity of said message. Jesus wasn’t very popular in his day either.
The more popular we become, the more worldly we become. The biggest churches in our country preach virtually nothing that offend any of their members, but only peace, safety and prosperity that will tickle their ears. If that is what you seek, I pray you do not find it here.
God Bless.
